Whitman Duo Cap Off Careers at States

Senior heavyweight Josh Daryoush and 160-pounder Bradley Taylor finished off their Whitman wrestling careers in fine fashion at this weekend’s State Tournament at Cole Field House on the University of Maryland’s campus. Bradley took 2nd place in his weight class and Josh took 3rd in his. With only two wrestlers Whitman still managed to place in a tie for 16th out of 72 total teams who qualified wrestlers for States!

Bradley Taylor won his first two matches on Friday by a score of 4-1 and 2-0 to get into the semifinals. He then won his semifinal match on Saturday morning by a score of 4-3 over Tola Morakinyo of Wilde Lake. Bradley wrestled tough but came up short in his State Final appearance losing a tough match to Austin Wenzlaff of Tuscarora by a score of 12-2. This was Bradley’s first placement in the State Tournament. Bradley finished the year with a record of 26-7.

Josh Daryoush also won his first two matches on Friday with a fall at 3:18 and a score of 7-1 in the quarterfinals. Josh then lost his semifinal on Saturday to Jason Johnson of River Hill by fall. However, Josh was able to rebound and regroup and wrestle admirably by winning his next match over Dylan Dopson of North Hagerstown by a score of 4-2 and then beating Lorenzo Maddox of North County by a score of 6-1 to place 3rd in the State Tournament. This was also Josh’s first placement at States. He finished the year with an impressive record of 30-2!

Vikings qualify two Region Champs for State Tournament

Whitman qualified four wrestlers for this weekend’s Region tournament held at Sherwood High School. 152 pound Sophomore Jack Calder was joined by a trio of Whitman Seniors. They were 160 pound Bradley Taylor, 170 pound Rafi Sayada, and heavyweight Josh Daryoush.

Calder qualified for regions in his first year of varsity wrestling and completed his season with currently a team leading 26 wins. Rafi Sayada also qualified for regions in his first year in the varsity lineup and finished his season with 21 wins. Both wrestlers wrestled with heart, determination, and pride. Congratulations to Jack and Rafi for turning in amazing results all season long.

Whitman’s Region tournament was headlined by Bradley Taylor’s and Josh Daryoush’s weight class championships. Each wrestler wrestled aggressively and offensively to win their respective weight classes. Taylor was able to improve upon a disappointing outcome at the county tournament by winning his second consecutive Region title. Taylor won the Region title at 171 pounds last year. He beat Magruder’s Kamen Barnes in the finals by a score of 5-3. Daryoush was solid and controlling in his three victories as well. Daryoush wrestled two out of county opponents in his semifinal and finals match to win his title. After beating South Hagerstown’s Aaron Rowland in the semifinals he then went on to beat North Hagerstown’s Dylan Dopson in the finals by a score of 3-1.

Both Taylor and Daryoush will compete at this coming weekend’s State Tournament at University of Maryland’s Cole Field House. Taylor will take a 23-6 record to Cole. Daryoush will take a 26-1 record into States. Each wrestler is looking to get on the podium at states for the first time. Weigh-ins are at 12:30 on Friday and 8:00 A.M. on Saturday. Wrestling will begin at 2:30 P.M. on Friday afternoon and 9:30 on Saturday morning. I hope to see you all out at Cole to cheer on Bradley and Josh.

JV Tournament Saturday Februrary 11

Gaithersburg High School is hosting their annual “JV County Tournament” on February 11th. Weigh-ins will begin promptly at 7 AM. All JV wrestlers will be asked to go directly to Gaithersburg High School by 6:30 AM. Your coaches will meet you there early so you can check your weight. This is the final JV wrestling event of the year. It is a one day tournament only. Gaithersburg will run this tournament on 4 mats all day. Championship rounds will be timed with 2-1-1 periods while the consolation side of the bracket will be timed with 1-1-1 periods. The first two rounds are single elimination!

Vikings Suffer Two Defeats

The Whitman Grapplers suffered two defeats on a Tri at home on January 23rd. This was a tri that was rescheduled from January 21st due to inclement weather. The Vikes wrestled the Springbrook Blue Devils in the first of the round robin matches and managed to win only one match en route to losing 66-5. Notching the only win for the Varsity grapplers was Senior Rafi Sayada (160). Rafi scored a technical fall over his opponent to garner those 5 team points. Due to injuries and absence the Vikings were forced to forfeit three weight classes.

In the last round of the evening the Whitman wrestlers rebounded admirably losing a very tight match to Clarksburg 37-34. The Vikes had the lead by three going into the last match but were unfortunately forced to forfeit that last weight class, resulting in a final losing margin of three points. Starting off the impressive dual was sophomore Stephen Sharbaugh (106) wrestling aggressively and picking up the fall with only 7 seconds left, which got the Vikes off to a 6-0 start. Two matches later, Jacob Cutler (120) picked up another fall for the Vikes, this time in the second period. Also notching victories for Whitman were Lucas Roldos (138) by fall, Kevin Whitmeyer (145) by major decision, Jack Calder (152) by fall, Rafi Sayada (170) by fall, and Bradley Taylor (182) by decision in OT. This was an inspiring match by the entire team for rebounding from a tough loss and wrestling so well. The Vikings won 7 of the 12 matches (2 matches were forfeited by the Vikes) wrestled against a tough Clarksburg squad. An additional congratulations to the JV wrestlers who wrestled aggressively and with heart in that second dual of the day picking up a multitude of wins, many of them by fall!

Vikings best Cavaliers 66-6!

The Whitman Vikings traveled to Kennedy High School on January 11th and picked up a resounding 66-6 win. The Vikes were paced by wins from Josh Daryoush(HWT), Stephen Sharbaugh(106), Jacob Cutler(120), Alex Miltenberg(126), Abby Fisher(132), Lucas Roldos(138), and Jack Calder(160). Picking up wins via fall were Daryosuh, Sharbaugh, Miltenberg, Fisher, and Calder. The wins marked the first varsity wins for Miltenberg and Fisher. Also winning via Forfeit were Kevin Whitmeyer(145), Andrew Cullinane(152), Matthew McClanahan(171), Rafi Sayada(182), and Bradley Taylor(195).

Tri-Meet Rescheduled to Monday, January 23 at 3:30 PM

Due to inclement weather, the tri-meet that we had scheduled for Saturday, January 21 has been cancelled.
As of right now it has been rescheduled for this coming Monday (1/23) at 3:30 P.M. That means that weigh-ins will be at 2:30 and all wrestlers should report to Whitman no later than 1:00 to help set up mats.
All wrestlers will receive a 2-pound allowance for Monday’s weigh in. That means that 108 = 110, 115 = 117 etc… The weight will be back to scratch weight(with the 2 pound growth allowance) on Wednesday.
All wrestlers do your best to get in some work today and tomorrow to maintain your conditioning.

VIKINGS START SEASON WITH 3-1 MARK!!

The Whitman wrestling team has started the season with an impressive 3-1 Dual meet record. The Vikings started off the season with an impressive 52-21 victory over the visiting Poolesville Falcons. The Falcons have a talented squad of many returning starters. Recording victories by fall for the Vikings were Stephen Sharbaugh(106), Will Baker(113), Kevin Cullinane(126), Jack Calder(152), Max Sessions(195), Jacob Shiman(220), and Josh Daroush(HWT). Also recording wins for the Vikes were Jacob Cutler(120), Lucas Roldos(138), and Bradley Taylor(182).

The Vikings then took their annual trip up to Derwood for the Mad Mats Tournamen hosted by Magruder High School. After winning Mad Mats twice and placing 2nd twice in previous years, Whitman brought a youthful and talented squad up to the tournament. The Vikes were lead by Senior Captain Josh Daryoush who won his weight class with an impressive win by fall at Heavyweight. Daryoush wrestled perhaps one of the more impressive and exciting matches in his semifinal bout. After giving up 5 early points, Josh battled back and won 10-9 on a takedown in the waning seconds. Max Sessions turned in an impessive performance at 195 placing 3rd. This was Max’s first placement on the podium in any varsity tournament. He went 4-1 on the weekend. Other placers for the Vikes include: Bradley Taylor placed 4th at 170, Stephen Sharbaugh placed 5th at 106, and both Jack Calder and Jacob Shiman placed 6th at 152 and 220, respectively. The Whitman grapplers placed a respectable 7th out of 19 teams.

Whitman continued it’s impressive start with an equally impressive 51-27 victory over the Gaithersburg Trojans. Whitman traveled to Gaithersburg and started the meet at 152 pounds for the second consecutive dual. Sophomore 152 Jack Calder got things rolling with a first period pin. Following his lead Junior Andrew Cullinane, Seniors Rafi Sayada and Bradley Taylor, Sophomore Max Sessions, Junior Jacob Shiman and Senior Captain Josh Daryoush all recorded first period falls. Each of them notched 6 team points for their efforts. Sophomore Harriet Symington kept things rolling with a 2nd period fall at 106. The lone other win for the Vikes was recorded by Freshmen Aidan Leighton at 132.

In their latest action the Whitman wrestlers wrestled to a 1-1 finish in Saturday’s(12-17) tri-meet with Sherwood and Churchill. In the first dual of the day the Whitman team dropped a close 4 point dual meet loss to Churchill. Winning wrestlers versus Churchill include Harriet Symington, Jack Calder, Rafi Sayada, Bradley Taylor, Max Sessions, and Josh Daryoush. Whitman got off to a fast start winning 6 of the first 7 bouts but could not hold on as they lost 37-33. The team got off to a similarly fast start against Sherwood just to see that lead disappear toward the end of the dual. Coming down to the last 2 bouts at 152 and 160, Whitman found itself down by 6 points. Junior Andrew Cullinane wrestled valiantly for 6 minutes to hold on to a slim 6-4 victory. Sophomore Jack Calder was handed the unenviable position of “win and the team wins, lose and the team loses”. Jack wrestled well and couldn’t secure a necessary fal l(or win by bonus points) in the first two periods. However, Jack’s conditioning and tenacity came through as he was able to sink a secure and deep half nelson and get the fall in the third period. Whitman won 39-36. Other wrestlers winning for Whitman were Aidan Leighton, Lucas Roldos, Rafi Sayada, Brad Taylor, Max Sessions, and Josh Daryoush.

2011 WEIGHT CERTIFICATIONS!

The weight certifications for this wrestling season will be Saturday, November 5^th. This is a MANDATORY team function. We will be leaving Whitman on a bus as a team at 10:30 to travel to Blake HS. You will need your permission slip that is attached here and a photo ID (if you don’t have the ID it’s ok, but it makes it easier.) We will be back to Whitman by about 12:30. Please wear comfortable clothes (sweats with athletic shorts underneath) and a T-shirt/sweatshirt. Athletic shorts and T-shirt must be worn for the analysis. PLEASE remember to stay hydrated for this. Here is a link to hydration tips. If you are not hydrated the body fat test will not work properly and you will have to go to the makeup date which is the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
