The Whitman wrestling team finished the annual Magruder Invitational tournament as the 1st place team!!!
The Vikings were paced by a trio of finalists at the December 7th and 8th tournament. Those finalists were headed by champions Taylor Leighton (171 pound sophomore) and Danny Lee (215 pound sophomore), and second place winner Eric Beverly (145 pound Junior). Eric Beverly started the finals for the Vikings. Eric wrestled a long tough match but came up just short at the buzzer, losing 9-8. Taylor Leighton wrestled just 3 matches later and was able to secure the fall in thesecond period for crucial bonus points. However, Danny Lee wrestled the most dramatic match of the championship round. Danny wrestled a terrific match. Danny was winning 4-3 as the clock ticked down into the final seconds of the third period. Unfortunately, a penalty point was awarded to his opponent with only 9 seconds left to tie the score. Danny, keeping his composure worked quickly to take down his opponent and pin him as time expired in the match!
However, this was tournament win was a total team effort. Every member of the Viking squad contributed to the team championship. In addition to the three finalists there were 6 other wrestlers who placed among the top 5 and came home with medals. Third place finishers were 152 pound Junior Steve Fisher and 160 pound Junior Aaron Norris.
Two wrestlers placed fourth, 103 pound Sophomore Dylan Symington, and 125 pound Senior Captain Nick Robison. The two fifth place finishers were 112 pound freshman Andrew Follmann and 119 pound Senior Joe Hancher.
The Whitman wrestling team was in a fight all day Saturday with three other teams: Damascus(2nd place), Manassas Park from VA(3rd Place), and Magruder(4th place). In the end it was just a single point that separated the top two teams, Whitman with 209 points to Damascus’ 208 points.
