The Whitman Vikings Wrestling team was the focus of two news articles this week.
‘‘The first practice is when we knew,” said 125-pounder Nick Robison, who pinned Decatur’s Brickell Tingle on Saturday. ‘‘I don’t think anyone expected us to do that well, but as soon as we got in the room, we knew we had a lot of talented guys. It’s not over; I think everyone can place at countys, regionals and states. But this was a great season overall.”
Whitman was the happiest losing team at Saturday’s Maryland state wrestling duals at North Carroll High School.
First-year coach Derek Manon was getting slaps on the back and congratulations. The wrestlers seemed at ease while packing their bags and accepting hugs from parents.
“One thing goes the other way, and you don’t know what happens,” said Manon, who wanted to give credit to former coach Andy Wetzel. “I’m proud of my kids for wrestling the whole time. We put in work all year, and we showed we can beat the best in our region and wrestle with the best in the state.”
