The Whitman Vikings won this past weekend’s tournament at Magruder with a a total of 232 points, beating out Quince Orchard, Magruder, and Northwest who placed 2nd through 4th respectively. Whitman ties a team record (according to former coach Andy Wetzel) with 7 finalists in the tournament.
Both Eric Harder and Steven Fisher took home second place, losing very close decisions in the finals. Winning in the finals were Eric Beverly and Taylor Leighton who both won exciting matches in overtime. This was Leighton’s second consecutive Mad Mats tournament title. Danny Lee also won his second consecutive Mad Mats title with an impressive pin in the final. Heavyweight J.D. Hamilton, in only his first year of wrestling, secured a pin in only 44 seconds to win his weight class. Aaron Norris won the 189 pound weight class wrestling aggressively for 6 minutes, winning by a major decision. Aaron was also voted the tournaments “Most Outstanding Wrestler. This is a prestigious honor because it is voted on by the all the coaches at the tournament.
Also placing among the top five were 4th place finishers Andrew Follmann and Jordan Tritell, and fifth place finisher Sawyer Symington.
