The Vikings took to the mats Wednesday night in a highly anticipated match against a very promising Panther team. The Panthers are one of the teams expected to compete in regionals this year. However, the Vikings are seeking a repeat trip to regionals as well and the Vikings completely dominated this duel winning 48 – 25.
The Vikings recorded 4 pins. At 126, Freshman sensation Andrew Shiman shocked a state ranked Nolan Smith with a couple of cradles that eventually resulted in a pin. And in perhaps the pivotal match of the evening, at 145, Senior Kevin Cullinane pinned his opponent in the third period. Team Captain and State Place finisher 152 Junior Mitch Fenton pinned a game Steven White III in the first period. And at 170, Junior Marcos Solloso pinned his overmatched opponent from Paint Branch, Abu Abdullah. Senior Captains Evan Smith and Matthew McClanahan also contributed with wins by decision at 5 – 2 and 7 – 0 respectively.
Newcomer Freshman Devin Carrone at 120 wrestled well and gained valuable experience at the varsity level but suffered a loss as did 220 Junior Zach Salem-Mackall and Junior Heavyweight John Vipulus both also wrestling their first varsity matches. 132 Junior James Bamberger had a very tough match and came up short against the veteran, ranked wrestler Ryan Van Meers. The highly anticipated debut of 106 Freshman Clark Boinis was delayed after he suffered a freak injury during warm ups. This resulted in a forfeit benefitting Paint Branch. The Vikings benefited from a couple of forfeits as well at 113, 138 and 195. Chris Habibian, Cyrus Sobhani and Jonah Brain each received credit for the forfeits.
The Vikings depart Friday for the Keyser Classic this weekend and then will face off in a dual against the Bulldogs at Winston Churchill HS. Good luck Vikings!
