On Wednesday January 24, 2018, Whitman hosted Wheaton High School in a home dual meet. The Vikes were looking to keep their team winning streak alive and they did just that by soundly beating Wheaton 66-6 for their fifth straight team victory. This home win brought their County team meet record to 6-3.
Our winning score included 5 pins by Whitman wrestlers. Up first, John Luke Iglesias faced one of Wheaton’s two wrestlers with honorable mention in the rankings. The Wheaton wrestler went two periods with John Luke with a score of 9-1 but Iglesias pinned him in the first 30 seconds of the third. At 285, Tom Wilmarth then took to the mat and pinned his opponent in 47 seconds. John Mackall at 160 and Yussef Zaki at 195 also followed suit with pins in the first and second periods respectively.
The return of Max Gersch (145) to the mat after an early season injury led to Whitman’s other pin of the evening. Max came out blazing and had a takedown in the first seconds of the match and then finished his opponent off with a pin in the first period. Welcome back Max and congratulations!
Our other wins of the evening included Peyton Casamento at 120 versus Wheaton’s other HM ranked wrestler. Peyton held him off in a tough match and never let him score, winning 4-0. Caleb Brenner (126), Colby Fong (138), and Thomas Santora (182) also all held off their opponents and recorded wins. Lastly, Seb Turkewitz (170) had an impressive match scoring a multitude of back points and came away with a 4 point Major decision score of 19-5.
The other 18 team points were added by Wheaton forfeits to Issac Besrat (106), Clark Boinis (132), and Sang Hanna (152)
There were only JV two matches against Wheaton and Whitman won by a score of 12-0. Arthur Dehareng and Will MacDonald were both able to score pins on their opponents!
