The Whitman wrestling team has opened the season with a strong 4-1 record. The Vikes started out strong with a pair of 78-6 victories over Kennedy and Wheaton. Whitman only lost one bout in each of those duals.
One week after the Magruder tournament the Viking wrestlers met again with the Magruder squad along with a strong Wootton team in a tri-meet at Wootton High School. At that tri the team split, with a lost to Wootton followed by a strong win after a disappointing loss 43-33 over Magruder. The Vikes lost 37-36 to Wootton in a dual that featured 5 pins for Whitman matched by 5 six point wins by Wootton. Whitman wrestlers wrestled to two decisions while the difference came by a decision and a 4 point major decision by Wootton.
Only three days later the Whitman grapplers were back on the mat against an always strong Paint Branch Panther team. Wrestling well the Vikes were paced by pins from Ned Daryoush, Harriet Symington, Jacob Rosenblum, Kevin Baker, Eric Harder, Mike Harder, Alex Hysong, Brad Taylor and Josh Daryoush. Also earning wins were Kevin Whitmeyer and Max Sessions in the dual meet which added up to a 61-15 win.
The Whitman Vikings wrestled through tough teams in Magruder and Clarksburg to win the 2010 3a/4a West Dual meet Region title on Tuesday night.
In the first match against Magruder the team split the total number of matches with the Colonels, 7 wins apiece. The match was decided on bonus points. Whitman earned 5 pins to Magruder’s 4. Garnering victories for the Vikes were Sawyer Symington, Dylan Symington, Eric Harder, Mike Harder, Andrew Follmann, Taylor Leighton, and Danny Lee. Dylan started off the match with a tough decision against an opponent he has faced three times this season. Perhaps the best match of the dual came at 125 where captain Eric Harder earned an overtime win over Parke Overmiller avenging a loss to him earlier this season. That was followed by 4 pins by M. Harder, Follmann, Leighton, and Lee. After consecutive losses at heavyweight and 103 the Vikes were down by four heading into the final match. However, calm and steady Sawyer Symington went out to secure the fall and send the Vikes to the Region Championship Dual.
Awaiting the Vikings in the second dual of the evening were the Clarksburg Coyotes. In an odd sense of symmetry the two duals were virtually identical. After once again splitting the matches at 7 apiece Whitman earned the win through bonus points. The Vikes were able to secure 5 falls to Clarksburg’s 4 (one by FF). Coming through with wins for Whitman were S. Symington, Ben D’Elia, M. Harder, Brad Taylor, Leighton, Lee, and Ned Daryoush. Ben D’Elia started off this dual with a big win at 125. After two tough losses at 130 and 135 Mike Harder stopped the Coyote momentum with a fall at 140. Two matches later sophomore Brad Taylor won a big match at 152. Although only winning 2-0 Taylor was in complete control. After two more losses the Vikings were down but knew there was a ton of talent and experience left in the final 6 wrestlers. Leighton, Lee, and Daryoush all secured quick falls sending the match back around to the lightweights. Only up by one point with two matches to go once again Sawyer Symington turned the tide and pinned his opponent two clinch the victory by Whitman!!
All of the wrestlers who wrestled last night wrestled with Aggressiveness and Determination, part of our A.B.C.D’s. Congrats to the all the Whitman wrestlers and the entire Whitman Wrestling Program on the third consecutive Dual Meet Title!!
On Wednesday, February 11th the Whitman Vikings wrestling team beat Springbrook and Magruder to claim it’s second 4A/3A West Region title in as many years. In what may have been Whitman’s best wrestling all season the Vikes stormed out to leads of 32-7 and 37-12 against Springbrook and Magruder respectively before forfeiting the final 4 bouts of each dual. Whitman wrestlers were 16-4 in the 20 matches wrestled on the mat. Coming away with two wins for the Vikes were Eric Beverly, Steven Fisher, Aaron Norris, Ned Daryoush, Danny Lee, Sawyer Symington, and Eric Harder. Also garnering victories for Whitman were Taylor Leighton and one HUGE win by Keegan Barber.
Thanks to all the parents, fans, teachers, and administration who came to the matches to support our team. It is always such a boost to see our section of stands filled up the most. Our guys really feed off that excitement and emotion.
Whitman looks to continue their winning ways this weekend at Marriott’s Ridge High School. Wrestling begins at noon when we wrestle Old Mill. Please come out and support the team once more!!!

The Whitman Vikings won the Region Duals last night on a total team effort. In one of the longest dual meets that anyone can remember the Vikings pulled out a very hard fought win against a talented Springbrook squad. Whitman was down almost the entire match but was able to pull out the win in the last match of the first dual of the night. Danny Lee won the final match against a wrestler who had beaten him twice a year ago. The Vikings also got HUGE wins from Dylan Symington, Andrew Follmann, Jordan Tritell, Shane Davis, Steve Fisher, Aaron Norris, and Paul Havenstein.
After the emotional win against Springbrook the Vikings had little time to regroup and get ready for the Region Championship against Damascus. The Vikings this time had the lead for nearly the entire match, and held off a late charging Damascus for the title. Matt Broullire sealed the victory with a last second takedown at heavyweight for a 35-28 win. In addition to Broullire winning, other wrestlers to earn wins were, Symington, Joe Hancher, Nick Robison, Michael Harder, Eric Beverly, Steve Fisher, and Aaron Norris.
It was a great night of hard fought aggressive/dedicated wrestling!! The Vikings are now 16-0 and head to the state duals on Saturday at North Carroll High School.
