• A dual meet consists of a Varsity team of 14 weight classes: 106, 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145, 152, 160, 170, 182, 195, 220, and 285 (HWT)
    • JV matches will follow the Varsity dual meet on any given day.
    • Remember, a two pound “growth allowance is given to each wrestler after the New Year. This means that 106=108, 113=115, etc… for the rest of the season.
  • Before the match starts a starting weight class is selected at random.
    • The captains meet in the center of the mat with the referee to choose odd or even.
    • This signifies which team has to send out their wrestler first
      • For example, if the match starts at 106 then that is the first match. So it is an odd numbered match. If we have “odd’s” then that means that we must send our wrestler out to the mat first. The next weight class, 113, is the second or an even match and the opposing team must send out their wrestler first.
  • Each match consists or three, 2 minute periods.
    • The wrestlers start on their feet, or in neutral position, in the first period
      • The wrestler’s goal while in the neutral position is to score a takedown on their opponent. A takedown is worth two points. This is when the offensive wrestler gains control of his opponent down on the mat. “Control” is often gained when one wrestler is behind the other.
      • From this point on the goal is to work a variety of pinning combinations to “pin” your opponents shoulders to the mat for a period of two seconds.
    • If a “fall/pin” is not secured in the first period then the wrestlers wrestle two more two minute periods.
      • In the second period one wrestler is given choice for “top, bottom, neutral, or defer.”
        • This means he has the choice to start on top in Referee’s position, bottom in Referee’s position, neutral(on their feet), or he may defer his choice to the third period thus giving his opponent the choice in the second period
        • The wrestlers will then begin to wrestle and may find themselves in a variety of positions all while trying to secure the fall/pin for themselves and the team.
