The Season

The majority of the High School wrestling season is largely team oriented with individual tournaments coming the last three weekends of the season.

In the state of Maryland the season consists of:

  • 14 dual meets (one team’s starting 14 against another’s)
  • 3 team tournaments (these are up to the coaches discretion to schedule)
  • Teams are also split up into 3 divisions because Montgomery County is so large.
    • Each team wrestles all the teams in their division
    • The division team with the best record is named the Division Champion
  • Region Duals (these are the team playoffs)
    • The top four teams in our region, which is all 25 teams in Montgomery County (except for Poolesville, Rockville, and Clarksburg)
    • Region Duals qualifiers are based on best record
  • State Duals
    • These consist of the four Region Dual Champions from across the state.
      • Whitman is in the 4A/3A West Region
  • County Tournament
    • All wrestlers from all the teams in the county, 4A/3A and 2A/1A, are entered into the tournament
  • Region Tournament
    • Only the top 8 wrestlers who have earned the most points throughout the season qualify for the Region Tournament
    • Each wrestler earns:
      • 4 points per dual meet win
      • 1 point per tournament win(or 2 pts. for each dual meet tourn. win)
      • Place points for tournaments: 16 pts. for 1st, 12 pts. for 2nd, 9 pts. for 3rd, 7 pts. for 4th, 5 pts. for 5th, and 3 pts. for 6th
      • Points are also earned for placing in the previous year’s region or state tournament
  • State Tournament
    • A wrestler advances to States if they place in the top 4 of their weight class at the previous week’s Region Tournament.
